As we look forward to the 2013 race, I can’t help but wonder what we can do to make it better than ever. Among other things, the prospect of cash payouts comes to mind.
Here’s what I’ve come up with: I’d like to charge a SMALL admission fee this year…say $20. I’ll split it up to cover race expenses, (beer, gas money, bbq, swag, etc.) and to pay out cash awards to the top 3 finishers. If we have as many racers as we did in 2012, 1st place could easily pay out $500.
Now before anyone calls me a sellout, I’d like to make one thing very clear: I’m not here to make money.. I just don’t want to lose my ass (again). Trust me, everyone’s going to get their money’s worth and I won’t be getting rich off of this thing. And seriously, anyone who would complain about a $20 admission fee for a 100+ mile race is probably an asshole anyway.
In addition to the top 3 riders getting paid, I’ll select a rider whom I think is a badass and award them a cash prize, just for being awesome. This rider will be selected exclusively by me, using the same criterium I used to select the winner of the Surly frame last year.
If there are any questions regarding what I think is “awesome”, please refer to this photo of my nephews:
And just to prove I’m not some d-bag trying to make money off of grassroots cycling, I’ll allow any racer who couldn’t finish the course in 2012 to race for FREE in 2013. Just to clarify that: If you DNF’ed in 2012, you may race for free in 2013. I think that’s more than fair. Registration will open soon.
You may now return to your New Year’s day hangovers.

Hey Bob! Steve sides here. I love the post. Make sure you get me the address to send my Sponsorship check. I am excited
Steve, you are the man!! just sent you an email with Cedar Cross HQ’s address. Let me know if you need anything else.
Cash for the first 3 places sounds good. I bet it’ll also keep a 4-way tie for 1st from happening this year.
I would NOT feel bad about charging a mere $20 for the cedar cross race. DK200 uped their race fees to $95 a person!!!! According to this logic you should be charging at least $47.50. Anyone who complains about the very small race fee does not deserve to participate.
Actually, when you compare his prices with some other big cycling events it’s really a bargain. I think the Leadville 100 is like $300+ now. Hopefully Jim never realizes how much most of us are willing to pay to ride the Dirty Kanza. The DK is just one of those events that gets in your blood.
I think most people realize I’m only trying to make the race better with the small fee.
Travel expenses, hotel, food, drinks, etc puts this event well over $300!
Yeah, but I’d say this photo of you at Checkpoint 3 is worth that.

I hate you!
Just seeing that picture again makes me want to eat a bunch of cheese burgers and drink beer. My motivation to get back to that place is lacking right now.
I know how I felt sitting there and that picture about explains it all.
Bob-you’re a bad mamma jamma! I can’t wait for this gnarly event to occur! HELL YES!
Bonk Hards OGRE race this year is going to be 60 bucks, so 20 is more than fair!! Hell, you probably only have to give plasma once to make that. The only question I have is Aaron going to get is race fee waived for modeling for the websites cover photo?
so when does registration open??
I’m thinking we’ll open it up in early February.
